Shoes worn in Martial Arts - what are they called?

The ones I have in mind are black and have a cotton or reddish plastic sole (I%26#039;m more interested in the former)

What are they called?

I would like to buy some to use around the house....

Also can they be washed/dried?

because the ones I have are kinda dirty ;)

Shoes worn in Martial Arts - what are they called?
I%26#039;ve always called them kung fu shoes or tai chi shoes. Yes they can be washed, just don%26#039;t put them in a drier.
Reply:Tabi shoes. I know you wanna put my answer up as the best =).
Reply:Bushido shoes, Tabi shoes all shoes are washable
Reply:The on%26#039;es you%26#039;re desscribing are not tabis. Tabis have a split toe. The best martial arts shoes are Feiyue, available form many online stores for areound US$15. They are about US$4 in China. They are canvas low-tops (white or black)with red and blue stripes (there are many similar know-off brands as well, but Feiyue is the best of all of them. These are not the ones you%26#039;re talking about hough-those that you describe are generic cotton shoes and have no brand name. The best place to find them is in any Chinatown shop selling shoes, clothes or kitchen wares.

And they can all be machine washed and dried, though hang fry is better for whoes with light rubber soles so they won%26#039;t warp and twist (I wash all mine regualrly, and they don%26#039;t seem to suffer for it).
Reply:Kung fu slippers, are quite comfortable. Have a look at these examples:
